The purpose of Fraserside’s Biggest Little Garden in Town (BLGT) project is to increase food production in urban settings. The BLGT is a container garden project which teaches and encourages individuals and the community in general, to utilize small areas to grow vegetables.
You may become a BLGT member if you live in community that hosts the BLGT program, and if you live in an apartment or home with limited access to land . If you are low-income, membership is FREE! If you are not low-income, we ask that you make a donation to the program.
The BLGT provides its members with a three-tiered cedar garden, soil, fertilizer, plants/seeds, tools and a handbook. All of these things are provided and delivered free of charge to the members. The BLGT handbook is made up of pictures and information on how to grow, harvest and prepare the vegetables provided by the program. Every BLGT member is invited to attend the educational workshops offered in the spring and fall.
The target audience for this program is low-income families living in apartment buildings. Apartment dwellers who are not low-income may become members, but are asked to make a donation to the program.
All members sign a contract stating:
I will care for the vegetable plants as they grow.
I will ensure the vegetables are eaten by either my family or friends. Any extra food will be given to the food bank. I promise that no food will be wasted.
I will try to participate in at least 2 workshops/training sessions. I understand the purposes of these workshops are to:
improve my gardening skills
improve crop production
share recipes and
share my experiences and discoveries with other members
I understand I am permitted to keep the containers from one year to the next as long as I am a member of the 'Biggest Little Garden in Town'. If I become unable or unwilling to maintain the garden, I will contact Fraserside at 604-522-3722 (117) and make arrangements to have the containers returned.
